Hamilton's America

The PBS special "Hamilton's America" is set to air October 21, but I was lucky enough to get a sneak preview of the first half at my library Monday night. It was delightful to be in a small audience of fans who laughed in lots of places.

I really enjoyed what I saw. It's a time capsule of LMM's life and development of the musical, from its beginnings as a single song for the White House showcase to its Broadway debut and cultural splash. None of it was particularly revelatory, considering how many of LMM's interviews and behind-the-scenes peeks I've gobbled up, but there were some great moments with the cast and crew, plus other assorted talking heads. (There was one section where George W. Bush spouted off something so inane about history that the audience started laughing and I couldn't hear the rest of what he said. The filmmakers then followed his clip with one of Elizabeth Warren, and oh, the contrast!)

There were also a few new performance clips, enough that I'm itching to get my hands on the footage. I hope PBS releases the special on DVD or something, especially if they have more material they didn't include in the show itself.

So here's your reminder to mark your calendars, set your DVRs, and do whatever else you need to do to see this.

How to do it!

PBS is free over-the-air in the U.S., so the only thing PBS checks for is whether your internet address is indeed in the U.S.

Fortunately, there's an app for that! I use
https://www.tunnelbear.com/
TunnelBear, a free utility which connects your UK internet to a US server. Magically, the US server looks like the origin of the streaming request. (You can mimic connections to servers all over the world!)

Test it first:
Once Tunnelbear is running, visit here for a brief animation:
http://www.pbs.org/pov/schoolsout/video/storycorps-shorts-schools-out/
If that works, then you're in!

Sometime between 22 and 30 October, visit
http://www.pbs.org/wnet/gperf/episodes/hamiltons-america/

episodes are kept for a week minimum, although some stay up for years.

(I used these tools to watch Sherlock premieres, until BBC required proof of paid licence).
